Shea (Vitellaria paradoxa) butter is extracted from the shea nut of the shea tree, which is indigenous to Africa. It take several years for the tree to produce fruit but, once it does, it can continue doing so for up to 200 years. Aura Cacia Fair Trade Organic Shea Butter comes from a women’s cooperative in Ghana where the butter is sometimes called ‘women’s gold’ because producing it provides a significant source of income for many West African women.

Shea butter is full of vitamins (A, D, E and F) and essential fatty acids — predominantly palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic and arachidic fatty acids. The main nutrient difference between shea butter and shea oil is the butter’s higher stearic acid content.

Shea butter has long been used for deep moisture in skin and hair care. In addition to effective use as a stand-alone product, it is a wonderful ingredient to add to other homemade moisture-focused products like body butters, lotions and creams.

It is generally considered to be protective and soothing to all skin types, including severely dry and cracked skin.

Recipe: Warming Massage Balm

Ingredients:

5 drops Aura Cacia Juniper Berry Essential Oil

4 drops Aura Cacia Balsam Fir Needle Essential Oil

3 drops Aura Cacia Nutmeg Essential Oil

1 ounce Aura Cacia Fair Trade Organic Shea Butter

1 teaspoon Aura Cacia Organic Sweet Almond Oil

1. In a small pan over low heat, warm shea butter and sweet almond oil until just melted.

2. Remove from heat, allow to cool slightly, then add essential oils.
